" Hi Everyone,
The 2015-16 steelhead season has come to a close. For your interest, I’ve attached the final hatchery steelhead PIT tag summary for this year.
This year shaped up to be a very solid run of hatchery steelhead, and by all accounts our wild steelhead run was strong as well. We estimated over 20,000 Grande Ronde and Imnaha hatchery steelhead migrated above Bonneville Dam, with over 13,000 over Lower Granite Dam into the Snake River. Fishing was pretty consistent throughout the fall, winter, and spring seasons on the Grande Ronde and Wallowa. I wished the river would have cooperated more on the Imnaha this spring, but we can only manage so much.
Thanks to our staff at Wallowa Hatchery, I’m happy to report this year’s take of broodstock went well. We were able to collect the parents needed to meet our release goals in a few years, and the eggs were in great shape.
As we look ahead to this fall, I wanted you to know we’ll be looking for volunteers to catch hatchery steelhead for our fall broodstock program again. Please mark your calendars for the week of October 10-14th, with more information to come later this summer. We’ll look forward to having your help to maintain this very successful component of our Wallowa hatchery program.
Thanks for your continued interest in our local steelhead, I consider myself very lucky to work with very engaged and attentive anglers. We really value your input in how we manage your fishery resources; therefore, I want to invite you to an upcoming ODFW town hall meeting next week.
The La Grande meeting will be May 12, at the Island City Hall, from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Other East Region meetings will occur in Klamath Falls on May 10 and Bend on May 11.
Director Curt Melcher will be here for the meeting and will discuss our budget, its development and ongoing initiatives. We would love to hear what you and other license holders think is important in developing our budget. I hope to see you at the meeting.
In the meantime, have a great summer! "
